William Russell has been called the first of the "war correspondents", based on his reporting during the Crimean War. His account of his travels in the US during the opening of the Civil War is very valuable for the background that it provides on the thinking of the South in 1861. He is biased towards the South, but disgusted by slavery, and has a dim view of Northern Leadership. Still, is is very useful for a student of the Civil War.
